People give to the Catholic Church

for a combination of theological and practical reasons, primarily rooted in the concept of stewardship (returning a portion of God's gifts) and the practical need to fund the Church's mission and extensive charitable works

Practical and Charitable Use of Funds

Donations are essential for covering the day-to-day operational costs and the vast network of services provided by the Church:

  • Parish Operations and Maintenance: Funds pay for essential expenses such as utility bills (heating, lighting), insurance, general maintenance, and repairs for church buildings and facilities.

  • Salaries and Staff: Donations cover the salaries and benefits for priests, deacons, lay ecclesial ministers, and administrative staff who manage church programs and support services.

  • Local Community Services: To support local initiatives like food banks.

  • Education and Formation: Faith formation programs such as RE for Kids OCIA and youth groups and preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation.

Ultimately, giving is a personal decision, made prayerfully and intentionally, that allows individuals to invest in their community and live out their faith through acts of charity and support. Many parishes provide annual financial reports to show members exactly how their contributions are used.
